Competition Rules and Entry Information

The Canadian Nationals carving competition is organized and managed by the Grand Valley Woodcarvers Club in conjunction with the Kitchener-Waterloo Wood Show.

PRE-REGISTERED ENTRIES


All carvers are requested to pre-register their entries for the competition by
February 28, 2009 by mailing the completed entry form along with the entry fees to:

Carvers may also email the electronic entry form to Don Price at dprice@golden.net .  Electronic entry forms will also be accepted as pre-registered if received by February 28, 2009.  Payment of the entry fees for emailed entry forms may be paid to the Grand Valley Woodcarvers Club on Thursday, March 12, 2009 or Friday, March 13, 2009 when the entries are delivered to the competition.

 

Carvers who have at least one carving to enter are strongly advised to pre-register that first entry.



MAIL-IN ENTRIES


Mail-in entries will be accepted. All mail-in entries MUST:

1) Be properly packed and well-protected to prevent damage in transit.

2) Be accompanied by:

a) a properly completed entry form

b) a cheque payable to Grand Valley Woodcarvers Club for the full amount of the entry fees

c) any necessary Canada Customs documents

d) the name, address and phone number of the person to whom it is to be returned

e) a cheque payable to Grand Valley Woodcarvers Club to cover the return shipping costs

3) Be sent with all shipping costs, including return shipping, prepaid via by the carver's choice of carrier (courier or other), with proper insurance coverage (if desired by the carver) to:

4) Carvers who send mail-in entries should contact Don Price via email or telephone as soon as their entry has been sent to advise the number of packages, the carrier used, and the waybill or tracking number.



ENTRY CLASSES:


OPEN CLASS:
 

All carvers may enter. Carvers who have won one Best of Class award, or a total of 10 first place ribbons in Intermediate class competition MUST advance to the Open Class. All carvings, including the pattern and the habitat, must be the entrant's original work (excluding eyes).  Cast feet are not allowed.
 

INTERMEDIATE CLASS:
 

Open to any carver by choice, or who has progressed beyond the Novice Class by winning a Best of Class, or a total of 10 first place ribbons in Novice Class competition. A carver who has won a first or second place ribbon in Open Class competition cannot re-enter the Intermediate Class. All carvings, including the habitat, must be the entrant's original work (excluding eyes).  Cast feet are not allowed. 
 

NOVICE CLASS:
 

A carver who has won a Best of Class, or a total of 3 first place ribbons in Beginner Class competition.
 

BEGINNER CLASS:
 

A carver who has not won a Best of Class, or a total of 3 first place ribbons in Beginner Class competition.  



These class regulations apply only to the Canadian National Wildfowl Carving Championship.
 


ENTRY CATEGORIES:

Admission of entries to all categories is generally based on the International Wildfowl Carving Association (I. W. C. A.) rules for inclusion of particular bird familes in the category. For the latest IWCA rules, please look at the IWCA web site at http//www.iwfca.com .


Category 1A: Decorative Life Size Diving Ducks

Diving and Sea Ducks. Carvings in Category 1A are to be life size, and decorative.  Carvings will be floated, but they do not necessarily have to self-right. Bird species included in Category 1A include all species of Diving and Sea Ducks only.  


Category 1B: Decorative Life Size Marsh Ducks

Marsh Ducks. Carvings in Category 1B are to be life size, and decoartive.  Carvings will be floated, but they do not necessarily have to self-right. Bird species included in Category 1B include all species of Marsh Ducks only.  


Category 2: Decorative Ducks – Non-Floating

Diving and Marsh Ducks. Any scale, excluding miniatures. Bird species included in Category 2 include all species of Marsh, Diving and Sea Ducks only.  


Category 3: Decorative Waterfowl (Not Ducks)

Those families of waterfowl which include all species of geese, brants, loons, swans and sea birds. Any scale, excluding miniatures.  


Category 4A: Decorative Life-Size Songbirds A

Songbirds in Category 4A include all species of Anis, Barbets, Bee Eaters, Bluebirds, Catbirds, Chickadees, Creepers, Crows, Cuckoos, Dippers, Doves, Flycatchers, Gnatcatchers, Goatsuckers, Hoopers, Hornbills, Hummingbirds, Jays, Kingfishers, Parrots, Pigeons, Roadrunners, Swifts, Toucans, Trogons and Woodpeckers. Carvings in Category 4A must be mounted on a base.  


Category 4B: Decorative Life-Size Songbirds B

Songbirds which include all species of Kinglets, Larks, Magpies, Mockingbirds, Nuthatches, Pipits, Robins, Shrikes, Swallows, Thrashers, Titmice, Thrushes, Vireos, Wagtails, Warblers, Waxwings and Wrens. Carvings in Category 4B must be mounted on a base.  


Category 4C: Decorative Life-Size Songbirds C

Songbirds which include all species of Blackbirds, Boblinks, Buntings, Cardinals, Cowbirds, Crossbills, Finches, Grackles, Grosbeaks, Juncos, Meadowlarks, Orioles, Redpolls, Sparrows, Starlings, Tanagers and Towhees. Carvings in Category 4C must be mounted on a base.  


Category 5: Decorative Birds of Prey

Those families of wildfowl which include all species of eagles, falcons, hawks, owls, and vultures. Any scale, excluding miniatures.  


Category 6: Decorative Others

Those families of wildfowl which include all species of Shore Birds (Avocets, Cranes, Flamingos, Godwits, Herons, Ibises, Limpkins, Oystercatchers, Plovers, Rails, Sandpipers, Snipe, Stilts, Storks and Woodcock), and Upland Game Birds (Grouse, Pheasants, Quail and Turkeys). Any scale, excluding miniatures.  


Category 7: Decorative Miniature Wildfowl

Any species of wildfowl included in categories 1 through 6. Decorative Miniature Wildfowl shall be one-half life-size, or less, to a maximum length of 8 inches (beak to tail).  Entries will be measured at the show.  Entries longer than 8 inches will be moved to other categories at the discretion of the Grand Valley Woodcarvers Club.  


Category 8: Working Decoys

Any species of waterfowl included in Categories 1A, 1B, 2 or 3 (excluding non-game species of Sea Birds). Must be practical and durable. Decoys will be floated and must self-right from any position. Geese, Swans and their subspecies will be required to self-right from the side. Combing, blending and scratch painting will be acceptable, but no burning or fine texturing. Keels by which an anchor line could be attached are required, but anchor lines and anchors are not required.  


Category 9A: Decorative Life-Size Smoothie (Waterfowl)

Any species of Waterfowl included in Categories 1A, 1B, 2 or 3. No burning or fine texturing. Decorative painting to the artist's highest ability.  


Category 9B: Decorative Life-Size Smoothie (Non-Waterfowl)

Any species of wildfowl, excluding all species in Categories 1A, 1B, 2 or 3. No burning or fine texturing. Decorative painting to the artist's highest ability.   Ribbon only, no cash prizes, except if awarded Best of Class.


Category 10: Stylized Wildfowl

Any wildfowl species, scale or finish. Ribbon only, no cash prizes, except if awarded Best of Class.  


ENTRY FEES:    Pre-registration deadline is February 28, 2009.

Beginner, Novice, and Intermediate Classes:

        $10.00 (Canadian) for the first carving, and $7.00 for each additional carving.

 

Open Class: 

$16.00 (Canadian) for the first carving, and $10.00 for each additional carving.

 

Purchase Awards:


$35.00 (Canadian) for each Common Goldeneye Drake carving.

$25.00 (Canadian) for each Red Morph Eastern Screech-Owl carving.

$25.00 (Canadian) for each Male Indigo Bunting carving.

$25.00 (Canadian) for each Male American Golden Plover carving.

Deliver exhibits to carving registration area in Marshall Hall at Bingeman Park.

 

Saturday, March 14, 2009 to 8:30 am.:
 

Extended delivery of exhibits for carvers travelling over 150 km. (90 miles). Entries arriving after 8:30 a.m. will NOT be accepted unless the entrant is waiting in line to register by 8:30 a.m.

Judging begins.

 

Sunday, March 15, 2009 at 3:30 p.m.:
 

Presentation of awards, including the Purchase Awards.

 

Sunday, March 15, 2009 at 5:00 pm. - 5:30 pm.:
 

Pick up exhibits at the carving registration area. Exhibits may NOT be picked up prior to 5:00 p.m.



JUDGING BEGINS:
 

Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 9:00 am.
 


OTHER ENTRY RULES:
 

Only Wildfowl carvings will be accepted. No Domestic Birds.

An entrant may enter carvings in ONE class only. Purchase awards are not considered to be a class - all carvers may enter the Purchase Awards, but only Open Class carvers are likely to win these awards.

Entries are to be handmade, predominantly of wood. Any other materials, except eyes, are to be for structural use only. Cast legs are allowed in Beginner and Novice Classes only.

All carvings in categories 1 through 9B must be painted.

Carvings must have been completed in the 12 months prior to the opening date of the show, that is since March 17, 2008.

All entrants must complete and sign the entry form.

Entry fees are non-refundable. Post-dated cheques will NOT be accepted.

All entries should be pre-registered and accompanied by a cheque payable to Grand Valley Woodcarvers, and post-marked not later than February 28, 2009.

All carvings must be delivered to the registration area of the competition in Marshall Hall at Bingeman Park, Kitchener, Ontario, Canada from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2009 or from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 2009 MAIL-IN ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED, IF RECEIVED BY DON PRICE ON OR BEFORE FRIDAY, MARCH 13, 2009.

Judging will begin on Saturday. March 14, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. SHARP!

Entries must remain on display until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, 2009. Carvings must be picked up between 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The decisions of the judges will be final!

NOTE: Carvers with entry forms mailed prior to February 28, 2009 will receive two complimentary carver’s passes to the show.
 


AWARDS:
 

First, Second and Third Best of Category Ribbons will be awarded in all categories.

Honorable Mention Ribbons will be awarded at the discretion of the judges.

First, Second and Third Best of Class Ribbons will be awarded in all Classes.

Cash prizes will be awarded in the Open Class only Categories 1 through 9A and Best of Show.

PURCHASE AWARD RULES:
 

1) Open to all carvers.

2) Cash prizes of $150.00 and $75.00 (Canadian) will be awarded to the second and third place carvings respectively.

3) Carvings are to be life-size, in breeding plumage.

4) Carvings, including the pattern and the habitat, must be the original concept and design of the carver.

5) All entries are to be textured and painted.

6) Judging will be based on accuracy, artistry, creativity, essence of the species and quality of carving.

7) Permission is granted to show winners to compete at "The Worlds".

8) Entry Fee: See ENTRY FEES (above) or obtain an Entry Form.

9) The General Rules, Regulations, and Entry procedures for the Open Class apply.

10) While the purchase awards are open to all carvers, they are intended for those whose work has reached a VERY high level of expertise. To assure the purchaser of a quality carving, a first prize may not necessarily be awarded (at the discretion of the judges). The same restriction applies to the awarding of the second and third place awards in the purchase award categories.

Should any article be accidentally damaged, lost or stolen, the organizers will provide assistance for the recovery of the same, but will not recognize any claim for payment of the value, or any portion thereof.
