Competition Rules

Regulations apply only to Canadian National Wildfowl Carving Championship
  • Only Wildfowl carvings will be accepted. No Domestic Birds.

  • A carver may enter carvings in ONE class only.
    (Purchase awards are not considered to be a class)

    Carvers who enter birds not native to North America are requested to
    provide reference materials to assist the Show Committee and the judges.

  • All carvers may enter the Purchase Awards, but only Open Class carvers are likely to win these awards.

  • Entries are to be handmade, predominantly of wood. Other materials maybe used for habitat, eyes and structural purposes.

    Habitat and feet in Open and Intermediate Classes must be hand-made by the carver.

    Driftwood is allowed as a base for dowel mounted birds only.

    Cast feet/legs, stones, driftwood and the like are allowed in the Novice and Beginners class only.

  • All carvings in categories 1 through 10 must be painted.

  • Carvings must have been completed in the 12 months prior to the opening date of the show date.

  • All entrants must complete and sign the entry form.

  • Entry fees are non-refundable. Post-dated cheques will NOT be accepted.

  • All entries should be pre-registered and accompanied by a cheque payable to Grand Valley Woodcarvers.

  • The decisions of the judges will be final!


Mail-in Carving Entries

We will accept mail in entries for flat bottomed
waterfowl, including:

Categories 1(a), 1(b) 2, 8 and 10

Process for Mail-In Entries

1. Complete the registration form. Be sure to include your Email address
2. Enclose – cheque or money order - include $5.00 handling fee per box
3. Enclose a prepaid, return postage & shipping label with insurance
4. Place the above into an envelope and put into the box with your carving
5. Entries should arrive no later than Monday before the show date.
6. Please assure that your carving is well packed. It will be returned in the same package using the     same packing material.
7. The carver will not hold the Grand Valley Woodcarvers responsible for damage while in transit.

Classes

Beginner Class

A carver who has not won ONE (1) BEST OF CLASS*, or a total of FIVE (5) 1st place ribbons in
Beginner Class competition.

 

Novice Class

A carver who has won ONE (1) BEST OF CLASS*, or a total of FIVE (5) 1st place ribbons in Beginner Class competition.

 

Intermediate Class

This class is OPEN to any carver by choice, or who has progressed beyond the Novice Class by winning ONE (1) BEST OF CLASS*, or a total of TEN (10) 1st place ribbons in the Novice competition. A carver who has won a 1st or 2nd place ribbon in Open Class competition cannot re-enter the Intermediate Class.

 

Open Class

All carvers may enter. Carvers who have won TWO (2) BEST OF CLASS* or a total of TEN (10) 1st place ribbons in the Intermediate Class competition must advance to the Open Class.
All carvings, including pattern and habitat, are to be the carver's original work.

 

Where fewer then 4 birds are entered in a category, the Show Committee, at its discretion, may collapse a category and combine entries.

Category 1A

Decorative Life-Size Ducks - Diving Ducks

Carving will be floated but do not necessarily have to self-right.

Category 1B

Decorative Life-Size Ducks - Dabbling (Marsh) Ducks

Dabbling Ducks (click here to link to Avian Web for more information) Carving will be floated but do not necessarily have to self-right.

Category 2

Decorative Ducks - Diving and Dabbling (Marsh) Ducks

Any scale excluding miniatures

Category 3

Decorative Waterfowl

Geese, Loons, Swans, Sea Birds, etc. Any scale excluding miniatures.

Category 4A

Decorative Song Birds - Life-Size

Carvings in category 4A must be mounted on a base.

Birds in category 4A are:
Anis, Barbet, Bee Eater, Bluebirds, Catbirds, Chickadees, Creepers, Crows, Cuckoos, Dippers, Doves, Flycatchers, Gnatcatchers, Goatsuckers, Hoopers, Hornbills, Hummingbirds, Jays, Kingfishers, Parrots, Pigeons, Roadrunners, Swifts, Toucans, Trogons, Woodpeckers

Category 4B

Decorative Song Birds - Life-Size

Carvings in category 4B must be mounted on a base.

Birds in category 4B are:
Kinglets, Larks, Magpies, Mockingbirds, Nuthatches, Pipits, Robins, Shrikes, Swallows, Thrashers, Titmice, Thrushes, Vireos, Wagtails, Warblers, Waxwings, Wrens

Category 4C

Decorative Song Birds - Life-Size

Carvings in category 4C must be mounted on a base.

Birds in category 4C are:
Blackbirds, Bobolinks, Buntings, Cardinals, Cowbirds, Crossbills, Finches, Grackles, Grosbeaks, Juncos, Meadowlark, Orioles, Redpolls, Sparrows, Starlings, Tanagers, Towhees

Category 5

Decorative Birds of Prey

Any scale excluding miniatures.

Category 6

Decorative Others

Shore Birds, Game Birds, etc. Any scale excluding miniatures.

Category 7

Decorative Miniature Wildfowl

Any species of birds included in categories 1 though 6.

* Decorative Miniature Wildfowl shall be one half (1/2) life-size or less.

* The maximum length of the body cannot exceed 8 inches. The measurement is made from the base of the bill to the end of the longest upper tail covert using a tape measure.

Both criteria must be met.

Category 8

Working Decoys

Must be practical and durable. Decoys will be floated and must self-right from any position. Geese, swans and their sub-species will be required to self-right from the side. Combining, blending and scratch painting will be acceptable, but no burning or fine texturing. Keels required.

Category 9

Decorative Life-Size Smoothie

Any Species of Wildfowl.
No burning or fine texturing. Decorative painting to the artist's highest quality.

Category 10

Stylized/Interpretive Wildfowl

Any species, scale or finish. Ribbon only, cash prize only if awarded Best of Class/Show

Category 11

Contemporary Antique Decoy


1. Entries must be the carver's original design and interpretation of
    an 'old' decoy.
2. Decoys will be judged in hand.
3. Copies are not permitted.
4. All entries must be signed and dated.
5. Decoys should be made to look old by the manner in which they are
    carved, painted and finished.
6. Shorebirds and Wading Birds must be mounted on a dowel and
    have simple base.
7. Open and Intermediate Class ONLY. Cash prizes
    (3 year trial period)
